Fahr Away Hefeweizen is the multi-award-winning flagship from Turner Valley’s Fahr Brewing. Brewed by Jochen Fahr, a biomedical engineer turned brewmaster, this beer is a testament to German precision on Canadian soil. It is a traditional Bavarian-style Wheat Ale that strictly adheres to the Reinheitsgebot (German Purity Law). In 2020, it achieved the ultimate accolade, being named the World’s Best Hefeweizen at the World Beer Awards. It is designed for those who appreciate the classic, "fluffy" complexity of an authentic German wheat beer, characterized by its signature yeast-driven aromatics.
Beer Description
Fahr Away pours a classic, deep hazy gold appearing cloudy due to the suspended yeast and is crowned with a massive, rocky white head that boasts incredible retention.
Aroma: The nose is an absolute masterclass in yeast expression. It leads with dominant notes of ripe banana and spicy clove, followed by subtle hints of bubblegum and fresh sourdough. There is a soft, grainy sweetness from the wheat that provides a creamy, inviting foundation.
Palate: On the tongue, it is medium-bodied with a lush, "pillowy" mouthfeel and high carbonation. It leads with flavors of banana bread and creamy malt, which quickly transition into a spicy middle of clove and nutmeg. The bitterness is virtually non-existent, allowing the tangy, refreshing acidity of the wheat and yeast to provide a clean, crisp finish.
Profile: It sits at an approachable 5.3% ABV and a very low bitterness of 11 IBU, prioritizing aromatic complexity over hop bite.
Technical Notes: The secret to this beer’s world-class status is the proprietary German yeast strain and a traditional decoction mashing process. By boiling portions of the mash, Fahr develops a deeper malt complexity and that signature "breadiness." It is brewed with a high percentage of malted wheat and is left unfiltered to ensure the yeast remains in suspension, providing the beer's characteristic haze and flavor profile.
