Brew authentic Czech-style lagers with Wyeast 2278 Czech Pils, a premium liquid lager yeast sourced from the Czech Republic and prized for producing the clean, dry, malt-forward character that defines traditional Bohemian pilsners. This classic strain creates crisp, balanced lagers with soft malt richness, restrained fermentation character, and exceptional drinkability. Each Wyeast Activator™ pack contains approximately 100 billion cells, providing enough healthy yeast to ferment a standard 5-gallon batch under appropriate conditions. Wyeast 2278 is ideal for brewing Czech Pale Lager, Czech Amber Lager, Czech Dark Lager, Vienna Lager, Schwarzbier, and Pre-Prohibition Lager.
Wyeast 2278 produces a smooth, rounded malt profile with a firm, dry finish that allows traditional Czech ingredients to shine. Medium-high flocculation promotes excellent clarification during lagering while maintaining a balanced body and clean finish. A light sulfur aroma may develop during active fermentation, which is normal for this strain and dissipates during conditioning and extended cold lagering.
This liquid lager yeast features medium-high flocculation, 70–74% attenuation, and an alcohol tolerance of approximately 9% ABV. It performs best between 50–58°F (10–14°C) and is packaged with approximately 100 billion cells for dependable fermentation performance and consistent brewing results. Its clean fermentation profile makes it an excellent choice for traditional Czech and European-style lagers.
For best results, store refrigerated between 33–38°F and do not freeze. Pitch cold into well-oxygenated wort and ferment within the recommended temperature range. One Activator™ pack is suitable for many standard-strength 5-gallon batches, while a yeast starter is recommended for higher-gravity lagers, older yeast packs, or whenever additional cell count is desired. Perform a diacetyl rest as needed and allow several weeks of cold lagering to achieve optimal clarity, smoothness, and authentic Czech lager character.
Trusted by homebrewers and professional brewers alike, Wyeast 2278 Czech Pils delivers dependable fermentation, crisp drinkability, and the authentic malt-forward profile expected in classic Bohemian lagers. Its healthy cell count, reliable performance, and traditional Czech character make it an outstanding choice for brewing clean, balanced lagers with exceptional clarity and smoothness.
