Mother Nature nearly claimed this entire harvest. A violent squall battered the local fields adjacent to the Versailles distillery, drastically slashing the yield of a prized heirloom red corn crop before fermentation even began. Such devastation renders this expression remarkably rare. Unlike the ubiquitous yellow maize that dominates modern distillation, this deeply pigmented variety imparts a surprisingly savory, robust framework. Master Distiller Elizabeth McCall recognized the profound potential trapped within those surviving kernels, pivoting the mashbill to let this distinctive agricultural triumph command the stage.
Woodford’s grain-led philosophy thrives when pushing rigid boundaries. Securing a release from their experimental Distillery Series requires both exceptional timing and persistent effort, as these bottlings rarely leave the immediate orbit of Kentucky. These limited expressions deliberately dismantle conventional expectations. Collectors gravitate toward this specific tier because it provides a wholly transparent look into the mechanics of flavor generation, deliberately stripping away the pretense to highlight raw ingredient selection. You simply can't mimic this profound depth.
- Crafted using locally grown, storm-surviving heirloom red corn
- Bottled at a deliberate 90.4 proof to showcase unique grain nuances
- Highly constrained yield due to an extreme localized weather event
