Distilled at Buffalo Trace Distillery in Frankfort, Kentucky, Thomas H. Handy Sazerac Rye is the raw, barrel-proof entry in the revered Buffalo Trace Antique Collection (BTAC). Distilled in the spring of 2018 and aged for over 6 years in Warehouses H, S, and T, this 2024 bottling was dumped uncut and unfiltered at an intense 64.9% ABV (129.8 proof). The expression delivers an exceptionally punchy, spice-driven profile loaded with bold rye grain, dark sugars, herbal citrus, and deep oak structure.
Food Pairing: Smoked beef brisket, dark chocolate pecan tart, blue cheese, roasted venison, or slow-cooked pork belly with a maple-rye glaze.
Tasting Notes: Deep mahogany amber with rich clarity and heavy, slow-moving legs along the glass.
Nose: Intensely aromatic, opening with candied orange peel, dark molasses, and brown sugar, followed by fresh mint, toasted baking spice, clove, and charred oak.
Palate: Full-bodied and explosive on the palate, featuring rich caramel, cinnamon stick, and anise upfront before expanding into cracked black pepper, pipe tobacco, dark chocolate, and toasted rye grain.
Finish: Long, warm, and spicy with lingering notes of dark leather, drying wood char, sweet vanilla, and intense rye spice.
Serve: Enjoy neat at room temperature in a Glencairn glass, or add a few drops of water to open up the citrus, floral mint, and deeper oak layers.
