Slane Distillery sits on the grounds of Slane Castle in Ireland's Boyne Valley, and this whiskey carries the name of the village around it. Grain and malt whiskies are triple distilled, then matured separately in three cask types — virgin oak, seasoned oak and Oloroso sherry — before being married together. That 'Triple Casked' approach is what gives the blend its layered character and smooth finish, bottled here at 45% ABV in a 750 ml special edition marking 40 years with The Legacy of 81.
In the glass it shows golden topaz with toffee-toned highlights. The first impression is spicy, turning sweet with caramel, vanilla and butterscotch over a base of dried fruit, and the finish holds onto dry fruit and caramelized sugar. It's a whiskey made in tribute to the people of Slane and to anyone building a legacy of their own.
