COUNTRY: Papua New Guinea
Located in the southwestern Pacific, lies a county with immense cultural and biological diversity. While it is well known for its beaches and coral reefs, inland is a landscape that is geologically diverse with rich volcanic soil. Surprisingly, coffee production only dates back to the late 1920’s, despite the countries ideal growing conditions. The quality of coffee grown in Papua New Guinea is exceedingly high and often cups in the specialty coffee range, but due to several factors, such as economic and civil unrest, locals are often unable to obtain the exposure needed to access the international market.
REGION: Chuave District
The Chuave District lies within the Simbu province of Papua New Guinea. The Simbu Province is a land of rugged mountains and limestone. This specific region covers the tributary valleys of the Whagi and Tua Rivers. Coffee is the predominate crop in the region, grown by small crop holders.
PRODUCER: Siane Organic Agriculture Cooperative
This cooperative assists the small crop holders in the Chuave District with financing, organic certification, and coffee quality development. Being part of the cooperative also allows access to international coffee markets, creating greater earning capacity from the direct trade relationships. In addition, they also are active in the communty-based projects that promote gender equality and education.
