A & J's Root Beer Sarsaparilla Loose Leaf Tea from Nelson's Tea is a caffeine-free herbal blend that recreates classic root beer flavor using sarsaparilla, licorice, and complementary botanicals.
If you miss the complex, sweet-spicy profile of root beer but want to skip caffeine, carbonation, and artificial additives, this small-batch loose-leaf herbal tea delivers familiar soda-like notes without sugar or fizz. Crafted by a husband-and-wife team in Indianapolis, the 4 oz pouch is an easy way to try a nostalgic beverage reinvented as a warm or iced infusion.
What flavors and botanicals create the root beer taste?
The blend layers sarsaparilla and licorice root for the base sweet-spicy character, while birch bark, cinnamon, and anise star add familiar soda-style warmth and aromatic complexity. Supporting botanicals round out mouthfeel and depth without artificial flavoring.
- Sarsaparilla root and licorice: core sweet, earthy backbone
- Birch bark and cinnamon chips: warmth and soda-like spice
- Ginger, fennel, coriander, juniper, and burdock: balancing notes and herbal depth
How should I brew it for the best root beer-like cup?
Use 1–2 teaspoons of loose leaf per 8 oz of water heated to about 203°F and steep for roughly four minutes. Adjust leaf amount and steep time to intensify flavor or lessen sweetness; strain and enjoy hot, or chill and serve over ice for a soda-inspired iced tea.
- Standard ratio: 1 teaspoon per 8 oz for mild flavor
- For stronger taste: 2 teaspoons or a slightly longer steep
- Iced method: double-brew or cold-brew for pronounced root beer notes
Is this tea suitable for children or evening sipping?
Yes—A & J's Root Beer is naturally caffeine free and contains no artificial sweeteners or colorings, making it a family-friendly alternative to soda. Licorice root supplies a natural sweetness that helps satisfy cravings without added sugar, though those sensitive to licorice should consult a professional.
- Caffeine-free: safe for evenings and most kids
- No artificial flavors or sweeteners: clean botanical profile
- Natural licorice sweetness: reduces need for added sugar
