A large ring gauge can tell you a great deal about a cigar's blend, particularly when the tobacco has been selected for balance rather than sheer strength. The LH Premium Colorado Gordo is a good example. Created by tobacconist and blender Nick Syris, whose appreciation for traditional Cuban-style cigars informs the LH portfolio, the Colorado pairs an Ecuadorian Habano wrapper with a Nicaraguan binder and a multinational filler blend. Handmade in Costa Rica, it is a cigar that relies on the character of its tobacco rather than elaborate presentation to make its impression.
The Gordo's generous proportions give the interior tobaccos a more prominent role than in the Colorado Robusto, allowing the blend to develop a fuller, rounder character while retaining the aromatic qualities of the Habano wrapper. The profile is woody and earthy, with restrained spice, toasted tobacco and a subtle natural sweetness. There is enough body to satisfy an experienced smoker, but the Colorado remains a cigar of balance and composure rather than overwhelming intensity.
The Colorado Gordo is particularly well suited to smokers who appreciate larger ring gauges but still want to taste the distinctions between the tobaccos in the blend. Its substantial filler core rewards an unhurried pace, giving the cigar time to settle into its character. For the aficionado who values a well-constructed, medium-bodied cigar with traditional sensibilities, the Colorado Gordo deserves a place in the humidor. Give this one some time—its appeal is in the tobacco, not the theatrics.
