Beavertail Raspberry Ale is one of the most famous fruit beers in Western Canada and a legendary staple of Canmore’s Grizzly Paw Brewing Company. For nearly three decades, this beer has been a "must-try" for visitors to the Rockies. It is designed to be a fruit-forward crowd-pleaser that balances the sweetness of an ale with the natural tartness of real berries. While many fruit beers can feel syrupy or artificial, Beavertail is celebrated for its authentic fruit profile and its vibrant, "summer-in-a-glass" personality.
Beer Description
Beavertail pours a striking, slightly hazy reddish-pink reminiscent of a pale rosé with a fizzy, light-pink head that recedes quickly.
Aroma: The nose is an absolute bouquet of fresh-picked raspberries. It is incredibly aromatic, smelling like a basket of sun-ripened berries with a subtle, underlying sweetness of honey and biscuit malt. It smells fresh and "jammy" without being overly sugary.
Palate: On the tongue, it is light-to-medium bodied with a lively, "prickly" carbonation. It leads with a burst of natural raspberry juice, followed by a soft, bready malt middle. The finish is remarkably balanced; the natural acidity of the raspberries provides a clean, slightly tart "snap" that prevents the beer from being cloying.
Profile: It sits at a sessionable 5.0% ABV and a very low bitterness of 10 IBU, ensuring the fruit remains the undisputed star.
Technical Notes: The beer starts as a clean, well-balanced Wheat Ale base, which provides a soft, slightly creamy mouthfeel. Grizzly Paw then adds a massive amount of pure raspberry purée during the fermentation process. Using a wheat base is a classic choice for fruit beers, as the proteins in the wheat help carry the fruit flavors and provide a stable structure for the berry aromatics.
