What the Huck is the award-winning flagship fruit beer from Fernie Brewing Company, nestled in the heart of the Rocky Mountains in British Columbia. While many fruit beers use common berries like raspberry or strawberry, Fernie celebrates the regional identity of the Kootenays by using huckleberries a wild, tart mountain berry that is notoriously difficult to harvest. It is a "mountain-to-can" success story and one of the most recognizable fruit ales in Western Canada.
Beer Description
What the Huck pours a deep, slightly hazy purple-burgundy with a frothy, lavender-tinted head that offers a striking visual contrast in the glass.
Aroma: The nose is highly aromatic and distinctive. It leads with a punchy scent of wild huckleberries and forest fruit, which smells like a cross between a tart blueberry and a sweet cranberry. There is a soft, underlying bready malt sweetness that grounds the vibrant fruit notes.
Palate: On the tongue, it is light-to-medium bodied with a smooth, almost velvety mouthfeel. It leads with a burst of sweet-and-tart berry flavor. Because huckleberries have a more complex, earthy profile than garden berries, the beer has a sophisticated depth. The finish is clean and slightly dry, with the natural tannins of the fruit providing a subtle, refreshing "snap."
Profile: It sits at a sessionable 5.0% ABV and a very low bitterness of 15 IBU, ensuring the delicate mountain berries aren't overshadowed by hops.
Technical Notes: The base of What the Huck is a clean-fermented Wheat Ale. The inclusion of malted wheat provides a soft, "pillowy" texture and helps carry the fruit flavors across the palate. Fernie uses a high-quality huckleberry addition during the conditioning process to ensure the flavor tastes like authentic fruit rather than artificial candy.
