Bunnahabhain “Turas Math No. 1” – the inaugural release of the Westering Home Collection 2025, is a distinguished 15‑year‑old Islay single malt bottled at cask strength of 55.9% ABV and generously un‑peated. It chronicles a coastal voyage from spirit to shore.
🥃 Maturation & Composition
-
Distilled in 2008, this whisky celebrates dual maturation: one portion spent 15 years in Manzanilla sherry casks, while another matured 10 years in refill bourbon casks before receiving a 5-year Amarone red‑wine cask finish, before final marriage.
-
Non‑chill‑filtered, naturally colored, each batch is released in limited quantity as part of a trilogy honoring Islay’s seafaring heritage.
👃 Nose
Rich dark berries—black cherry, plum, blackberry—are woven with warm clove, roasted nuts, and nutty oak, followed by subtle wafts of sea breeze.
👅 Palate
Silky yet powerful, it unfolds with cinnamon pastry, treacle toffee, hazelnut, and sweet dried figs, transitioning to soft herbs that nod to Islay’s coastal terroir.
🍂 Finish
A long, warming spice-laden finish warms the palate with lingering oak, pepper, and a whisper of maritime salinity—a reminder of its island roots.
🗺 Style & Significance
-
By embracing sherry, bourbon, and Amarone casks, this expression bridges Spanish-Manzanilla freshness, Italian depth, and classic bourbon maturation.
-
The result is an elegant un‑peated Islay single malt that balances fruit sweetness, warm spice, and coastal resonance—a compelling departure from peaty Islay norms.
✅ Summary
Turas Math No. 1 is both a compelling debut and soulful tribute to Bunnahabhain’s maritime story—an exquisite marriage of cask influences delivering richness, depth, and subtle sea-spray elegance. A must-have for collectors and those seeking an elegantly un‑peated Islay malt with narrative and nuance.
