Introduction
Blue Run Kentucky Straight Bourbon Whiskey 'Chosen 23' is a distinctive single barrel expression released under the prestigious 'Chosen' private barrel program by Blue Run Spirits. Based in Georgetown, Kentucky, the company was co-founded by Mike Montgomery and is celebrated for disrupting the traditional whiskey industry with a focus on modern design and exclusive, high-quality releases. This particular bottling is curated with the expertise of Whiskey Director Shaylyn Gammon, who oversees the selection of barrels to ensure a premium sensory experience that highlights the nuance and complexity of their stocks.
Spirit Description
This bourbon pours a rich, deep amber colour. The nose is complex and inviting, featuring aromas of ripe red fruits—both skin and flesh—layered with citrus oleo saccharum, vanilla bean, and cinnamon candy, alongside hints of light roast coffee and chocolate chip cookies. On the palate, the profile is bold and leather-forward, unfolding with notes of tobacco leaf, barrel char, and cacao powder, balanced by baking spices and citrus peel. The finish is enduring and sophisticated, leaving lingering impressions of tobacco, leather, and dark chocolate. It is bottled at 55% ABV.
Food Pairing
The robust leather and tobacco notes of this bourbon make it an ideal match for rich, savoury dishes such as a dry-aged ribeye steak or venison stew. For a dessert pairing, the dark chocolate and coffee undertones complement a flourless chocolate cake or dark chocolate truffles. It also pairs exceptionally well with a premium cigar to echo the spirit's earthy finish.
