Benromach distillery
Benromach was founded in 1898 near Forres in Speyside. It closed in 1983, was bought by the independent bottler Gordon & MacPhail in 1993 and reopened in 1998. A small team makes the spirit by hand, and most releases use lightly peated barley to recreate the gently smoky Speyside style of the past.
The whisky
Benromach release their Cask Strength Vintages in small batches. Batch 3 of the 2014 vintage was matured for about a decade in first-fill sherry and first-fill bourbon casks, then bottled straight from the cask at 60.6% ABV. Benromach describe vanilla and fruitcake on the nose, with a creamy, spicy palate of stewed plum, Seville orange and toasted oak.
How to enjoy it
Benromach suggest tasting it neat and slowly first, then adding water to open up the aromas. At 60.6% ABV, a few drops at a time works best, and the sweeter, fruitier side comes forward as it is diluted.
