Introduction
Annex Waste Land is brewed by Annex Ale Project, which is located in Calgary, Alberta, Canada. Founded in 2015 by Andrew Bullied and Erica O'Gorman, the brewery began with a centrally located taproom in the 'Barley Belt' east of Macleod Trail. The brewery is known for pushing the boundaries of craft beer and soda production, often launching experimental and seasonal brews that challenge traditional industry standards.
Beer Description
This American West Coast IPA presents a balanced sensory profile that blends tradition with modern innovation. The aroma is characterized by pine and floral notes, which are driven by a complex symphony of hops including Chinook, Simcoe, Galena, Citra, and Galaxy. On the palate, the beer features amplified flavours and a classic West Coast bitterness, supported by a layered malt base of Two Row, Crystal, Vienna, and Biscuit malts. The body is full and robust, finishing with the intensified characteristics of Spectrum Citra hops, which were used here for the first time in an Annex brew. The alcohol content is 6.4% ABV, and it is noted for having trace bitterness despite its hoppy profile. There is no information available to suggest this beer is organic.
Food Pairing
The classic bitterness and tropical fruit notes of this West Coast IPA make it an excellent partner for rich and savoury dishes. It pairs exceptionally well with hearty fare such as beef burgers or spicy grilled sausages, as the hop profile cuts through the fat and protein. For a more refined pairing, it can be served alongside sumac spiced seared scallops or sous-vide lamb sirloin, which benefit from the beer's citrus and pine undertones. Additionally, its crisp finish complements appetizers like house-made elk corn dogs or spicy snacks that echo the hop complexity.
