33 Acres of Life is the cornerstone "California Common" (or Steam Beer) from Vancouver’s 33 Acres Brewing Company. This style is a unique piece of North American brewing history, originating in 19th-century California when brewers used lager yeast at warmer ale temperatures. 33 Acres has refined this rustic tradition into a sophisticated, hybrid brew that offers the rich, toasty complexity of an ale with the clean, crisp finish of a lager. It is widely regarded as one of the most balanced and food-friendly beers in their lineup.
Beer Description
This California Common pours a clear, beautiful deep amber-to-copper color with a thick, off-white creamy head and fine carbonation.
Aroma: It features a warm and inviting nose led by toasted malts and sweet caramel. These scents are balanced by the distinct woody and minty aromatics of Northern Brewer hops, with a subtle hint of stone fruit from the warm fermentation.
Palate: On the tongue, it is medium-bodied and exceptionally smooth. It leads with a rich, biscuit-like malt sweetness and notes of toffee, which are quickly countered by a firm, earthy bitterness. The finish is remarkably clean and dry, characteristic of its lager yeast heritage.
Profile: It has a very sessionable ABV of 4.8% and a moderate bitterness of 35 IBU, providing a sturdy flavor profile that remains refreshingly light on its feet.
Technical Notes: Brewed using a specific strain of lager yeast fermented at higher temperatures to produce unique esters not found in traditional lagers. It relies heavily on Northern Brewer hops for its signature "woody" bitterness and a precise blend of crystal malts for its deep amber hue and toasted sugar notes.
