Crafted in the heart of the Blue Ridge Mountains, Virginia Distillery Co.'s Courage and Conviction Double Cask Reserve is a testament to American single malt innovation. This small-batch whisky hails from Lovingston, Virginia, and showcases the distillery’s commitment to quality and patience, with each component aged no less than five years. The expression is matured in a mix of first-fill bourbon barrels and STR (shaved, toasted, re-charred) European red wine Cuvée casks, yielding a complex and rewarding profile.
On the nose, it opens with rich caramel, honeycomb, and red berries, weaving into notes of toasted oak and dark baking spices. The bourbon casks lend vanilla and a warm backbone, while the Cuvée casks deepen the character with hints of stone fruit, roasted nuts, and a subtle tannic grip. The mouthfeel is full and elegant, balanced by a 48% ABV that delivers warmth without overpowering the layered flavors.
Non-chill filtered and bottled at cask strength, this whisky is best enjoyed neat to savor its depth, or with a few drops of water to open up its structure. Courage and Conviction Double Cask Reserve is a bold yet refined expression of American single malt, ideal for collectors and curious palates seeking something uniquely Virginian.
