Urban Kitchen's Organic SCOBY Kombucha Starter Kit is a ready-to-use live culture and starter liquid combination designed to jump-start a one-gallon batch of homemade kombucha.
Whether you’re new to fermenting or a home-brewer looking for a reliable starter, this kit arrives with a USDA-certified organic SCOBY and starter liquid crafted from organic green and black tea, organic cane sugar and triple-filtered water. The pouch contains a mature culture that shortens your setup time and helps establish a strong fermentation environment so you can begin producing kombucha quickly and consistently.
How does this kit simplify brewing kombucha at home?
The kit removes much of the guesswork. Instead of growing a SCOBY from scratch or harvesting one from an existing batch, you get a mature, appropriately sized SCOBY and starter liquid that are lab tested and ready to go.
- Includes USDA-certified organic SCOBY and starter liquid for a one-gallon brew.
- Pre-measured balance of sugar and tea reduces recipe adjustments.
- Triple-filtered water base minimizes off-flavors from tap minerals.
- Mature culture accelerates reliable fermentation and consistency.
What should I expect when I open and use the SCOBY pouch?
Inside you’ll find a healthy, ¾ to 1 inch thick SCOBY and nutrient-rich starter liquid. The SCOBY’s thickness is chosen to promote steady fermentation—neither too slow nor too fast—so your first batch has the right balance of activity.
- Visible, firm SCOBY layer indicating maturity and structural integrity.
- Starter liquid with slight tang and amber hue ready for inoculation.
- Instructions: brew sweet tea, cool to room temperature, add pouch contents, cover, and ferment.
- Yield: designed to start a one-gallon batch; preserves culture for future brews.
How do I maintain and reuse the SCOBY for ongoing batches?
After your first fermentation, keep roughly one cup of the finished kombucha as starter liquid and place the SCOBY in a clean jar with enough brewed kombucha to cover it. This preserves the culture between batches and enables continuous, sustainable brewing.
- Reserve 1 cup starter liquid from each batch for the next ferment.
- Store SCOBY at room temperature in a covered jar away from direct sunlight.
- If pausing brewing, create a SCOBY hotel with several cups of kombucha to keep cultures healthy.
- Lab-tested cultures mean robust reusability across multiple cycles.
Are there environmental or cost benefits to using this SCOBY kit?
Brewing at home with a reusable SCOBY pouch reduces packaging waste and can be considerably less expensive than buying commercial kombucha. The organic sourcing and reusable nature of the culture align with greener, budget-conscious routines.
- Reusable SCOBY reduces single-use bottle purchases over time.
- Organic ingredients support cleaner sourcing and fewer synthetic inputs.
- One pouch initiates many future gallons of kombucha, lowering per-bottle cost.
- Compact packaging and long-lived culture minimize waste.
Who is this for: The Urban Kitchen Organic SCOBY Kombucha Starter Kit is aimed at home fermenters who want a dependable, organic starting culture—beginners who prefer a ready-made SCOBY and experienced brewers who value a lab-tested, reusable culture to streamline multiple batches. It’s also a good fit for anyone seeking a more economical and sustainable way to enjoy homemade kombucha without the time needed to cultivate a SCOBY from scratch.
