Starlight Distillery pulled off a flex. Securing authentic Japanese Mizunara oak is a notoriously grueling endeavor that causes immense headaches for coopers, and blending it with Indiana bourbon demands serious finesse. Yet, the team meticulously monitored these finicky barrels sourced directly from Japan to coax out an exquisite profile. The diligent team absolutely nailed the final execution. The resulting dram beautifully bridges robust Midwestern sweetness with a profoundly exotic, incense-laced nuance that will haunt your palate.
Batch 0003 didn't happen by accident. The production team carefully mingled an eight-barrel blend of their three-grain and four-grain mashbills. These underlying bourbons aged for a solid eight years in traditional American white oak before making the crucial leap into the rare Japanese casks. That secondary maturation lasted anywhere from eight months to over a year, depending on exactly what the individual casks dictated. It takes serious patience and relentless tasting. That unhurried interaction imparts remarkable depth, turning a fantastic base spirit into an incredibly complex, award-winning powerhouse.
You need this on your shelf. Bottled at a potent 110 proof, this cask-strength gem definitely doesn't pull any punches when it finally hits the tasting glass. The liquid immediately demands attention with a viscous texture that coats the mouth luxuriously. Those fabled Mizunara characteristics of sandalwood and toasted coconut weave seamlessly through the familiar caramel backbone. This allocated release drinks surprisingly and dangerously well. Every sip reveals another intricate layer, proving exactly why this ambitious release recently snagged top honors at the San Francisco World Spirits Competition.
