SMWS Big, Bold and Oh-So Smoky Cask 53.475 is a powerful 13 Year Old Islay single malt from Caol Ila Distillery, independently bottled by The Scotch Malt Whisky Society. Distilled on January 24, 2011, the whisky spent its first 10 years in ex-bourbon wood before being transferred to a refill heavy-toast, medium-char hogshead. Bottled at cask strength of 58.9% ABV, this intensely peated release was limited to just 288 bottles.
Food Pairing: Pair with grilled lamb, barbecued sausages, smoked mackerel, porchetta, charred vegetables or richly seasoned Mediterranean dishes.
Tasting Notes: Intensely smoky and savoury, combining bonfire smoke, charred herbs and coastal character with candied citrus, sweet confectionery and rich grilled-meat notes.
Nose: Beach bonfire smoke, charred herbs, balsamic, ash and tar with a distinctive coastal character.
Palate: Big and smoky with candied orange, sweet fruit candy, smoked mackerel, grilled sausage, rosemary and savoury herbs.
Finish: Long, robust and smoky with lingering char, smoked salt, herbs and sweet citrus.
