Smoke Wagon comes from Nevada H&C Distilling Co. in Las Vegas. Founders Aaron Chepenik and Jonathan Hensleigh source straight bourbon distilled at MGP in Lawrenceburg, Indiana. They age it in the Nevada desert and blend it themselves. Uncut Unfiltered is their barrel-strength bottling.
The mash is 60% corn, 36% rye and 4% malted barley. That high rye share gives the whiskey plenty of spice. The team mixes older and younger barrels for each batch. No water is added and it is not chill filtered. Proof moves with every batch and usually lands near 115.
On the nose you find caramel and brown sugar, with rye spice, cinnamon and a twist of orange rind. Toasted oak and vanilla sit underneath. The palate is thick and full. Caramel and toffee meet dark cherry fruit, cinnamon and rye. Leather, oak and black pepper give it a firm backbone. The finish runs long and dry, with leather, toasted oak, spice and a little chocolate.
Judges have taken notice. Smoke Wagon Uncut Unfiltered has won several Double Gold medals at the San Francisco World Spirits Competition. Whisky Advocate rated it 96 points. It also earned Double Platinum at the ASCOT Awards and Double Gold at the TAG Global Spirits Awards.
Take your first sip neat, then add water a drop at a time. The heat settles and more fruit comes through. Serve it with brisket, grilled steak, pecan pie or sharp cheddar.
