Matt Booth's Johnny Tobacconaut has always stood out for its unconventional personality, but the Maduro Toro makes a compelling case for the tobacco behind the theatrics. Introduced in 2026, this darker interpretation of the Room101 favorite is handcrafted by AJ Fernandez in Nicaragua. Unlike the original Connecticut-wrapped version, the Maduro is a Nicaraguan puro, combining a dark Maduro wrapper with Nicaraguan binder and long-filler tobaccos for a richer, fuller-bodied experience.
At 6" x 52, the Toro offers a particularly satisfying balance between wrapper influence and filler complexity. The Maduro leaf brings depth and richness, while the Nicaraguan core provides structure and a measured intensity. Expect an earthy foundation with espresso, dark cocoa and a restrained peppery finish. The Toro's traditional proportions give the blend room to develop without sacrificing the distinctive character of its wrapper.
The Johnny Tobacconaut Maduro Toro is an excellent choice for the experienced smoker who appreciates a full-flavored Nicaraguan cigar with a little more time to unfold. It offers the richness of Maduro tobacco in a familiar, well-proportioned format. Put a few in the humidor, particularly if you enjoy AJ Fernandez's more robust blends. There's considerably more to this cigar than its colorful name suggests.
