A Flat Mat for the Flat Bench
The Rhino Bench Mat is the straight-format option in the Rhino tamper mat range — a flat, food-grade silicone pad that sits directly on the bench surface with no corner hook or overhang. At 146mm x 206mm, it provides a generous tamping surface that keeps the portafilter stable and cushioned during each tamp, while the extra thickness protects the counter underneath from the gradual wear that builds up when tamping directly on stone, tile, stainless, or laminate. It's the format that works best when your tamping position is mid-bench rather than at a corner, or when you simply prefer a portable mat that can be repositioned or stored without a fixed anchor point.
Food-Grade Silicone, Extra Thick
The mat is made from durable, food-grade silicone rubber — the same material used across the Rhino tamper mat range — which combines cushioning with a surface that's easy to wipe clean and won't absorb coffee oils or odours over time. The extra thickness is the key differentiator from thinner mats: it absorbs more of the downward force during tamping, reducing the feedback transmitted to the bench surface and providing a more consistent feel underfoot across repeated use. Silicone is also stable across the temperature range of a typical espresso station, so the mat won't harden, crack, or warp from heat exposure near the machine.
Where It Fits in the Rhino Tamper Mat Range
The Bench Mat is the flat, portable option at $24. For a mat designed to hook over the edge of a countertop corner, the Rhino Classic Corner Tamper Mat (210mm x 145mm x 41mm overhang, food-grade silicone) is the corner-specific alternative. For a larger flat tamping surface, the Rhino Classic Bench Tamper Mat (200mm x 150mm, 8"x6") is the size step up. All three are available at Coffee Addicts in the tamping accessories range.
