Van Duzen Straight Rye takes its cue from a Northern California river, and its mash bill is just as distinctive: 67% rye, an unusually high 31% malted barley, and 2% wheat. The result is a rye built on spice and malt sweetness in equal measure, with grain, oak, and gentle fruit moving through a texture that stays smooth while keeping plenty of life. Bottled at 94 proof (47% ABV) in a 700 ml format, it's a grain-to-glass small lot release from Redwood Empire.
The Van Duzen River runs through 429 square miles of redwood groves as a tributary of the Eel River, carving out some of the most rugged country in Northern California. It carries the name of James Van Duzen, an early explorer of Humboldt Bay. The whiskey borrows that sense of exploration, along with the patience and craft behind the distillery's approach to rye.
