Pago de Carraovejas Ribera del Duero 2022 is an exceptionally expressive and powerful Spanish red that beautifully reflects its unique terroir. It opens with intense, fragrant aromas of ripe blackberry, purple plum, and crushed violets, elegantly layered with notes of dark chocolate, sweet baking spices, and a subtle touch of sandalwood. On the palate, this full-bodied blend of predominantly Tinto Fino is dense yet remarkably fresh, delivering a lush core of dark fruit perfectly balanced by chalky, fine-grained tannins and vibrant acidity. Aging for 12 months in French and American oak provides a seamless, harmonious texture that leads into a persistent, tension-filled, and mineral-driven finish.
Food Pairing: Pairs beautifully with traditional roasted suckling pig, grilled lamb chops, savory game meats, hearty beef stews, and aged Spanish cheeses like Manchego.
93 Points - James Suckling
A concentrated, dense Ribera del Duero, but there is a lot to like if you enjoy plushness, with its lush blackberry fruit and dark chocolate. Fine-grained and full-bodied on the palate, but fresh and still pretty tense, with chalky tannins. Drink from 2025.
92 Points - Robert Parker's Wine Advocate
The 2022 Pago de Carraovejas wants to be the expression of the valley that names the wine. It was produced with 93% Tempranillo, 4% Cabernet Sauvignon and 3% Merlot in a very warm and dry and challenging year when the wine achieved a whopping 15.5% alcohol after spending 12 months in 226- and 600-liter French and American oak barrels. It's dark, aromatic and heady, juicy and a little decadent, with ripe flavors and fine tannins, clearly reflecting the conditions of the year.
91 Points - Wine Spectator
A well-balanced red, with a concentrated core of blackberry paste and crushed mulberry flavors, plus appealing milled pepper, mocha, dried thyme and licorice aromatics. Rich but not overly weighty, integrating supple, fine-grained tannins and lively acidity. Tempranillo, Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot. Drink now through 2035.
