The Oxford Handbook of German Philosophy in the Eighteenth Century
This comprehensive handbook offers a collective rebuttal to the notion that 18th-century German philosophy holds little interest between Leibniz and Kant. It provides new insights into Kantian philosophy and its historical context, exploring topics such as philosophical method, metaphysics, the philosophy of mind, and the philosophy of mathematics. Beyond Kant, the handbook delves into aspects of eighteenth-century German philosophy that challenge the traditional Kantian narrative, highlighting the inadequacy of dividing thinkers into "rationalists" and "empiricists." It documents innovative methodologies, variations within philosophical traditions, and the prevalence of philosophical eclecticism. Furthermore, the book examines the concept of a single Enlightenment, proposing the existence of a religious Enlightenment, particularly through the Pietist movement, and tracing the intellectual contours of the Jewish Enlightenment. It also sheds light on the significant contributions of women during this period, especially in aesthetics and the philosophy of education, while also addressing their historical absence from influential German philosophical histories of the late 18th century.
