It's no mystery that the state of Washington produces some of the best cool-climate styles of wine in the nation. However, with this full-bodied 2018 Syrah, our winemakers at Open Secret have exposed a richer side of Washington wine. Nestled in the Columbia Valley AVA, these thick-skinned red grapes were sheltered from the cool coastal conditions commonly associated with this northerly state. This is thanks to a rainshadow effect created by the Cascade Mountain range, which means the climate here stays warm and dry with ample access to sunshine. These higher temperatures combined with a long growing season allowed for the Syrah grapes to ripen fully and expose their broad spectrum of dark fruit flavors. Off the record, this wine is frankly too good to be kept under wraps. We invite you to fill a glass and uncover covert dark fruit and layers of sophisticated spice.
