For decades, Old Overholt quietly occupied the bottom shelf, but those days are definitively over. This 12-Year Cask Strength release aggressively reclaims the brand's historic throne. Distilled in the spring of 2013 and left to weather the fierce, fluctuating Clermont climate, this spectacularly unfiltered rye is an absolute revelation. It completely bypasses the watering-down process. You are tasting a remarkably pure, unadulterated snapshot of Beam’s finest warehouse locations. This isn't just whiskey; it’s a twelve-year lesson in patience.
Maturation entirely alters the DNA of this classic Kentucky-style mashbill. While younger ryes typically scream with sharp, grassy mint, this mature iteration heavily leans into opulent dark fruit and seasoned oak. It absolutely demands your undivided attention. By deliberately bottling at a robust 117 proof, the masterful blenders preserved the heavy, fatty acids that provide an almost chewy mouthfeel. The liquid sits beautifully on the palate, slowly unfurling hidden complexities of leather and dry white pepper. It drinks incredibly well neat.
Securing a bottle of this annually allocated release is notoriously difficult. Enthusiasts fiercely hunt these extra-aged expressions, precisely because they offer a rare glimpse into rye's aristocratic potential. The profound depth here genuinely challenges the finest hyper-aged bourbons. You won't find any gimmicky cask finishes or modern shortcuts hiding behind this historic label. Instead, you get a brutally honest, barrel-proof pour that authentically celebrates American whiskey heritage without relying on any unnecessary apologies or compromises. You simply must taste the truth.
