Pegasus Pale Ale is a standout core offering from Calgary’s Ol' Beautiful Brewing Co., located in the heart of Inglewood. While the brewery often experiments with unconventional ingredients (like their Okami Kasu), Pegasus represents their take on the modern American Pale Ale. It is designed to be the "workhorse" of their lineup a beer that bridges the gap between a light lager and a heavy IPA. It strikes a precise balance between a sturdy malt backbone and the vibrant, citrusy aromatics of Pacific Northwest hops, making it a favorite for those who want flavor without palate fatigue.
Beer Description
Pegasus pours a clear, glowing amber-gold with a thick, frothy white head and moderate carbonation.
Aroma: The nose is bright and "piney." It leads with a classic punch of grapefruit zest and resinous pine, followed by a sweet, foundational scent of caramelized malt and honey. There is a subtle floral quality that rounds out the hop profile, giving it a fresh, forest-like bouquet.
Palate: On the tongue, it is medium-bodied with a smooth, balanced mouthfeel. It leads with a distinct toasted biscuit and caramel sweetness, which is immediately met by a firm, refreshing bitterness. The flavor profile is dominated by citrus peel and herbal spice, finishing dry with a clean, lingering hop "snap" that invites another sip.
Profile: It sits at a sturdy 5.4% ABV and a moderate bitterness of approx. 35–40 IBU, providing a classic Pale Ale structure.
Technical Notes: Pegasus is a showcase of traditional American hop varieties, likely utilizing a blend of Citra, Centennial, or Chinook to achieve its citrus-and-pine character. The "beautiful" balance is achieved through the use of Crystal malts, which provide the amber color and the residual sweetness necessary to stand up to the hop oils. It is fermented with a clean American ale yeast to ensure the ingredients remain the star of the show.
