The whiskey world loves a comeback story. Michter’s revived its legendary Sour Mash in 2012, and this Toasted Barrel Finish represents its absolute zenith. Master of Maturation Andrea Wilson doesn't just pick random casks. She meticulously selects fully matured batches before transferring the liquid into bespoke barrels crafted from exceptionally rare, eighteen-month air-dried American white oak. The wood gets toasted, not charred. This crucial difference extracts deep, sugary compounds instead of bitter, heavy ash.
This isn't your standard whiskey. The exact mashbill remains a fiercely guarded secret. It beautifully rides the boundary between sweet corn and spicy grain, creating a completely idiosyncratic profile. By applying that secondary toasted maturation, the already rich liquid transforms into an absolute powerhouse of campfire confectionery and dark spice. You are tasting a beautifully orchestrated collision between precise cooperage and Kentucky tradition.
Bottled at an approachable 86 proof, it avoids aggressive ethanol burn. The lower alcohol content allows the delicate toasted notes to shine brilliantly. Most finished spirits lose their original character, but this expression miraculously preserves the foundational sour mash identity while adding outrageous dessert-like depth. Grab this allocated release immediately. Once these unique batches vanish from retail shelves, you will absolutely regret leaving empty-handed.
