This concentrated and 'beguiling' red wine originates from Italy, within the Tuscany region and the Toscana I.G.P. designation. Produced at the historic Castello di Fonterutoli, the Mazzei family has been making wine for 24 generations since 1435. Concerto, first released in 1981, was a pioneer of the 'Super Tuscan' movement, blending traditional Sangiovese with international Cabernet Sauvignon. The winery's philosophy emphasizes sustainable agriculture and the promotion of local varieties as an expression of regional identity, utilizing a modern underground cellar that respects the delicate hydro-geologic balance of the estate.
Wine Description
The 2020 Concerto presents a bright and punchy appearance with great 'terrific freshness'. The sensory profile is highly aromatic, featuring a nose of currants, flowers, and spices, layered with notes of plum, pomegranate, new leather, and blood orange. On the palate, the wine is full-bodied yet 'crunchy and juicy', showcasing crushed blackberries and raspberries underpinned by citrusy acidity and polished tannins. It is characterized by a savory quality and a 'slate texture' that provides a robust yet nuanced drinking experience. This blend consists of 80% Sangiovese and 20% Cabernet Sauvignon, typically reaching an ABV of 14.5%. The wine was aged for 18 months the Cabernet in small French oak barrels and the Sangiovese in tonneaux followed by three months in concrete tanks to reduce oak impact and preserve fruit purity. While Mazzei practices sustainable and respectful viticulture, this specific bottling is not certified organic.
