The Leaf by Oscar Maduro is one of those cigars whose packaging has become almost as recognizable as the cigar itself. Created through the collaboration between retailer Jim “Island Jim” Robinson and cigar maker Oscar Valladares, each cigar arrives wrapped in a rustic tobacco leaf rather than conventional cellophane. Peel that outer leaf away and the real story is underneath: a dark Nicaraguan Jalapa Maduro wrapper over Honduran binder and long-filler tobaccos, handmade in Honduras by Oscar Valladares.
The Jalapa wrapper gives the Maduro considerably more depth than the unusual presentation might lead you to expect. The profile is earthy and woody with dark cocoa, restrained pepper and a touch of natural sweetness, while the Honduran core provides enough structure to keep the cigar from becoming overly rich. Medium-to-full in character, this is a tobacco-driven Maduro with a nice balance between the darker Nicaraguan wrapper and the more restrained Honduran tobacco underneath.
Leaf by Oscar is easy to notice because of the tobacco-leaf packaging, but the Maduro has lasted because there's a good cigar underneath it. It's particularly worth trying for the smoker who enjoys the richness of Maduro without wanting an overly heavy smoke. Unwrap the outer leaf, give the cigar a little time to breathe, and let the Jalapa wrapper make the introduction. This is one case where the clever packaging leads to tobacco that's worth coming back for.
