Kujira 5 Year Old is a distinctive single grain Japanese whisky produced by the Masahiro Distillery in Okinawa, Japan's southernmost prefecture. Established in 1883, the distillery draws on over 140 years of expertise in crafting Awamori (a traditional Okinawan rice spirit). This expression is part of the "Ryukyu Whisky" category, which utilizes 100% premium Indica rice and black koji for fermentation. The subtropical climate of Okinawa plays a vital role in its development, as the high heat and humidity accelerate the interaction between the spirit and the wood, resulting in a depth of flavor typically associated with much older whiskies.
Whisky Description
This whisky presents a bright amber colour. The nose is inviting and sweet, featuring dominant aromas of caramel, vanilla, and a touch of liquorice, supported by the woody structure of virgin oak. On the palate, the body is smooth and mellow, delivering flavors of sweet toffee, fresh vanilla, and dried fruits like plums and cherries. The use of first-fill white oak casks introduces attractive tannins and a gentle spice profile of pepper and oak shavings. The finish is persistent and sweet, leaving a lingering trail of baking spices and woody textures. It is bottled at 43% ABV.
Food Pairing
The smooth, caramel-forward profile of Kujira 5 Year Old makes it an excellent companion for savory and umami-rich dishes. It pairs particularly well with grilled squid with butter garlic sauce or oyster croquettes, where the whisky's sweetness balances the salty, oceanic flavors. Its tropical and woody notes also complement roasted poultry or glazed pork ribs. For dessert, try it alongside crème brûlée, vanilla-based puddings, or dark chocolate, which highlight the spirit's innate caramel and spice characteristics.
