Jose Cuervo Reserva de la Familia Extra Añejo comes from the Cuervo family's own private cellar. The brand calls it the world's first extra añejo tequila. For generations, this blend stayed a family secret. In 1995, the family finally shared it to mark 200 years of making tequila. Jose Cuervo traces its roots to 1795, which makes it one of the oldest tequila houses still at work. These reserves were kept in a cellar beneath La Rojeña, the family distillery in the town of Tequila. The name simply means the family reserve. Now you can pour a glass of that history at home.
It all starts with 100% blue agave. The plants are left in the field until they are fully mature, often eight years or more. Workers shave the hearts clean before cooking. Then they steam them slowly in traditional masonry ovens for up to 52 hours. That slow cook gives the spirit a dense, rich base. The tequila then rests for at least three years in small new American and French oak barrels. Each barrel is charred to a different level, so each one adds its own layer. The result is a dark amber spirit with real depth.
Pour it into a tequila flute and give it a minute to open. The nose starts with oak, almonds and fresh apple. Then come green olive and warm cinnamon. It is an unusual mix, and it works beautifully. On the palate, rich oak meets toasted almonds. Caramel, dark chocolate and dried fruit follow, with a touch of butterscotch. Vanilla and cinnamon round things out and keep it soft. Take small sips and let each one rest a moment. The texture feels silky from the first sip. The finish is long, smooth and quietly complex. You will still taste the oak and spice a while later.
The bottle is part of the joy. Each one is numbered by hand, dated and sealed with wax. It arrives in a limited-edition wooden Artist Box crafted by Mexico-based artisans.
