In our quest to find the perfect Jack Daniel’s Barrel Proof Rye, we embarked on a journey that led us to a truly unique discovery. During the selection process, we were given a rare opportunity to taste a rye aging in grooved barrels, generally reserved for the legendary Jack Daniel’s Sinatra expressions. The only problem? The Sinatra Rye line doesn’t exist—at least not yet! This “forbidden barrel” was quickly removed, but we kept a small sample as a reference. Using this exceptional rye as our benchmark, we tasted numerous barrels and, to our delight, found one that surpassed even the elusive forbidden barrel.
Tasting Notes:
Nose: The aromatic journey begins with a refreshing hint of spearmint intertwined with the delightful sweetness of burnt sugar, reminiscent of the perfectly caramelized top of a crème brûlée. Subtle layers of char add a smoky depth, setting the stage for the complex flavors to come.
Palate: Prepare for a rollercoaster of flavors that excite and satisfy in every sip. The bold rye spice immediately takes center stage, followed by the earthy richness of tobacco and leather. Notes of oak char and the nutty, burnt sugar essence of pecan brittle add complexity, while baking spices and a surprising hint of cotton candy bring a delightful twist. Each sip offers a new layer, making this an adventure for your taste buds.
Finish: The finish is long and lingering, ensuring the experience stays with you. It’s a never-ending finale of wood char that avoids any tannic bitterness, complemented by a refreshing spearmint note that ties it all together beautifully.
