Hitachino Nest Espresso Stout is a world-renowned specialty stout from Japan’s Kiuchi Brewery. While many coffee stouts simply add cold brew to a finished beer, Hitachino takes a more intensive approach by adding locally roasted espresso beans directly into the boil (the copper). Featuring the brewery's iconic "Owl" branding, this beer is a masterclass in how to integrate intense roasted flavors without losing the refined, balanced character that Japanese craft brewing is known for.
Beer Description
This Espresso Stout pours a deep, midnight black, completely opaque with a thick, frothy, tan-colored head that persists like the crema on a fresh shot of espresso.
Aroma: The nose is intense and decadent. It leads with a powerful hit of freshly ground dark roast coffee and burnt sugar, followed by rich layers of dark chocolate, toasted hazelnuts, and a hint of dark fruit (like raisins or dried plums).
Palate: On the tongue, it is full-bodied and velvety, bordering on "creamy." It leads with a deep, roasted malt sweetness—think bittersweet cocoa and molasses. This is immediately followed by the sharp, acidic "zing" of authentic espresso. The finish is long and warming, with a complex bitterness that comes from both the hops and the coffee beans.
Profile: It has a robust ABV of 7.0% and a moderate-to-high bitterness of 36 IBU, providing a sturdy structure that stands up to the bold adjuncts.
Technical Notes: Brewed using a sophisticated malt bill that includes Pale, Crystal, Black, and Chocolate malts, along with roasted barley. The defining characteristic is the addition of espresso beans in the kettle, which extracts the deep oils and aromatics of the coffee. It is hopped with Northern Brewer and Chinook to provide an earthy, spicy backbone that complements the roasted notes.
