The Espinosa Comfortably Numb Vol. 1 is where this unusually packaged series began, and underneath all that psychedelic artwork is a very straightforward Espinosa idea: put good Nicaraguan tobacco beneath an Ecuadorian Habano wrapper and let the leaf carry the cigar. Made in Nicaragua, Vol. 1 uses a Corojo binder and Nicaraguan filler, giving the first installment a more traditional profile than its decidedly unconventional packaging might suggest.
The Habano wrapper is really the key here. It gives the cigar enough aroma and spice to keep the Nicaraguan tobacco from becoming too heavy, while the interior contributes the earthier backbone Espinosa smokers will recognize. Cedar, earth and a little coffee provide most of the character, with some natural sweetness and spice around the edges. It's medium-bodied and nicely balanced rather than an exercise in strength.
Vol. 1 is the logical starting point for anyone curious about the Comfortably Numb series. It's also a good choice for the smoker who likes Espinosa's Nicaraguan style but wants something a little more restrained than some of his heavier blends. The band may get your attention first, but fortunately there's a proper cigar underneath it. Put a few in the humidor and start the series where Espinosa did.
