Introduction
E. Guigal Cotes du Rhone Rouge is a prestigious red wine from the Cotes du Rhone region in the Southern Rhone Valley of France. Founded in 1946 by Etienne Guigal in the village of Ampuis, the estate has risen to global prominence under three generations of family leadership. The winery's philosophy is rooted in the motto 'Nul bien sans la peine' (no good without pain), reflecting an obsessive dedication to quality, low-yield farming, and exceptionally long barrel aging.
Wine Description
This wine exhibits a deep, dark red colour with a shiny appearance. The aromatic profile is intense and fresh, featuring notes of black raspberry, blackberry, and dark cherry layered with spices like black pepper and liquorice. On the palate, the wine is full bodied and racy, displaying a rich core of fruit balanced by rounded, smooth tannins and a touch of earthiness or black olive. It is characterized by its remarkable consistency, power, and elegance, leading into a long, self-confidently dry finish. The varietal composition is typically 50% Syrah, 40% Grenache, and 10% Mourvedre. The ABV is approximately 14.5% to 15%, and while not certified organic, the family avoids pesticides and chemicals in their vineyards. The optimal drinking window is from release to approximately 8 years after the vintage.
Accolades:
92 Points - Jeb Dunnuck
"The Cotes Du Rhone is smoking good, offering up blackberries, pepper, and garrigue in a round, supple, medium to full-bodied style. Based on 50% Syrah, 40% Grenache, and 10% Mourvèdre, partially aged in oak foudres, this impressive effort shows remarkable quality for the appellation."
