Compass Box The Peat Monster is exactly what its name promises — and then some. One of the most beloved and enduring expressions from John Glaser's Compass Box, The Peat Monster has been delighting peat lovers and converting skeptics since its introduction, proving that heavily peated whisky can be both bold and beautifully balanced when crafted with care and intention.
A blended malt — meaning it contains only single malt whiskies with no grain whisky — The Peat Monster is built around heavily peated Islay malts, primarily Caol Ila and Laphroaig, blended with a proportion of Clynelish from the Highland coast to add its signature waxy, fruity complexity. The result is a whisky that is assertively smoky yet surprisingly nuanced: the peat is bold and confident, but it never overwhelms the underlying fruit, sweetness, and texture that make this blend so compelling.
The nose is dramatic and inviting — campfire smoke, sea spray, and charred driftwood open up to reveal a surprising sweetness of vanilla, ripe citrus, and dark berry fruit that softens and rounds the smoke beautifully. On the palate, it's full-bodied and richly layered: smoked meat, dark chocolate, lemon zest, and a warming coastal spice build alongside waves of fruit and a characteristic waxy richness from the Clynelish. The finish is long, smoky, and deeply satisfying — peat, sea salt, dark fruit, and beeswax fading in a slow, magnificent wave.
