Colonel E.H. Taylor Barrel Proof is a straight Kentucky bourbon made at Buffalo Trace Distillery. It is bottled straight from the barrel, uncut and unfiltered. The style looks back to bourbon as it was made before Prohibition.
The name honors Colonel Edmund Haynes Taylor Jr., a key figure in early bourbon history. The barrels rest in warehouses built under his watch more than a century ago. Even the bottle and label recreate his original design.
Expect a big pour. Each batch has its own proof, and recent ones sit in the mid to high 120s. The nose opens with cooked berries, then rich caramel and a light floral note. The palate is bold and spicy, with toasty vanilla, dried oak and pepper. A long finish follows, with strong rye character and hints of fruit.
Awards back it up. Buffalo Trace lists Gold at the 2023 San Francisco World Spirits Competition and Double Platinum at the 2023 ASCOT Awards. It also earned Silver at the 2024 World Whiskies Awards and a Master medal at the 2023 American Whiskey Masters.
Pour it neat first. With this much strength, a little water helps the fruit come forward. A large ice sphere works well too. It makes a bold Old Fashioned or Manhattan. Try it with rich meats, dark chocolate or pecan pie.
This one is for the bourbon fan who wants whiskey at full strength. It is a prized bottle for collectors too.
