Chivas Regal Extra is a rich blended Scotch. It sits between the classic Chivas Regal 12 year old and Chivas 18 year old. What makes it different is the cask. A higher share of its whiskies is matured in Oloroso sherry casks. These are barrels that once held sherry wine from Jerez, Spain. They give the blend extra depth and a fruity sweetness.
The blend brings together rare malt whiskies and grain whiskies. On the nose you get ripe pear, creamy toffee and milk chocolate. The palate adds vanilla, caramel and a little ginger. The finish is smooth, with hints of almond and cinnamon.
Chivas Regal Extra is a good-value step up within the Chivas Regal price range. You can sip it neat or over ice. It also works well in a whisky cocktail like a Rob Roy. It is an easy pick for a gift or a quiet night in.
