This red wine originates from the rugged and beautiful Maremma region of southern Tuscany, specifically from the vineyards surrounding the historic Castello di Montepò near Scansano. Produced by the renowned Jacopo Biondi Santi, a direct descendant of the family that invented Brunello di Montalcino, Sassoalloro represents a modern evolution of Tuscan tradition. The wine is named after a massive volcanic erratic boulder located on the estate, known locally as the "Sasso Alloro" or "Witches' Stone," which has been the subject of local legends for centuries. The winemaking philosophy centers on the unique BBS11 clone (Brunello Biondi Santi 11) of Sangiovese Grosso, a proprietary heritage vine of the family. Unlike the long-aged traditional Brunellos, Sassoalloro is designed to be fresher and more dynamic, bridging the gap between historical pedigree and contemporary elegance.
Wine Description
Castello di Montepò Sassoalloro displays a brilliant, intense ruby red colour that often leans towards violet hues, especially in its youth. The nose is fresh, fragrant, and extremely persistent, led by distinct floral aromas of sweet violets and a generous fruit profile of Marasca cherries, raspberries, and wild berries, often underpinned by subtle earthy nuances and a whisper of forest floor. On the palate, the wine is celebrated for its soft and velvety texture; it is round and elegant, balancing the grape's natural vibrant acidity with silky, well-integrated tannins. It offers a "ready" yet sophisticated drinking experience with a long, harmonious finish. This 100% Sangiovese Grosso (BBS11) typically has an ABV of 13.5% and undergoes fermentation in stainless steel before being aged for approximately 14 months in un-toasted French oak barriques from the Tronçais forests, a specific choice made to enhance structure without overpowering the fruit with heavy toasted wood flavors. The optimal drinking window is from release up to 10–15 years.
