Cantina Tollo is a wine cooperative that was founded in 1960, at a time when many of its residents left the countryside in search of a better future. The families of the founding members of the cooperative, winemakers for generations, decided instead to stay in the vineyards and came together to create Cantina Tollo.
The town of Tollo rises on a rounded hill at an altitude of 150 meters, in the province of Chieti, about 20 km from Pescara in Abruzzo. The local economic activity is mostly agriculture, and in particular, on the production of DOC wines such as Montepulciano d’Abruzzo, Cerasuolo d’Abruzzo, Trebbiano d’Abruzzo, Pecorino and Passerina, which are the backbone of Cantina Tollo‘s wines.
The vineyards of Cantina Tollo extend over an area of more than 2.700 hectares, from the coastal hills to the slopes of the Maiella, in a typically Mediterranean climate, which is temperate with notable temperature fluctuations (both throughout the year due to the presence of the Maiella massif, as well as during the day) which give optimal conditions for the build up of aromatic compounds, and thus the production of high quality grapes. Their production focuses exclusively on native grape varieties traditionally used in the region. The vineyards are cultivated with the traditional method of pergolas. Nevertheless, Cantina Tollo welcomes innovation both in the field and in the cellar.
The Tollo aging facilities comprise large oak casks, tonneaux and barrels alongside vitrified cement tanks, nowadays considered the best for aging. Careful processing and vinification allow Cantina Tollo to produce quality wines at every price point. Their 2015 Montepulciano d’Abruzzo Riserva “Mo” was graced with the Tre Bicchieri seal, the highest award given by the Gambero Rosso (Italy’s “Slow Food” organization), recognizing this wine for its quality, and for being very representative of the wine of the DOC at this level.
