The Caldwell Mooncake Connecticut Robusto takes the cult following behind Yellow Cake and gives the blend a decidedly different expression. Yellow Cake began life in 2014 as one of Caldwell’s elusive event-only cigars, and Mooncake revisits that idea through the softer touch of a Connecticut wrapper. Caldwell has intentionally kept the binder and filler undisclosed, making this less about studying a blend sheet and more about what the tobacco actually delivers in the glass—or, in this case, the humidor.
At a classic 5" x 50 Robusto, Mooncake is creamy and approachable without becoming anonymous. Expect cedar, toasted bread and white pepper early, settling into roasted nuts, creamy oak and coffee with a restrained natural sweetness underneath. The Connecticut wrapper smooths the edges of the Yellow Cake character while retaining enough spice and tobacco depth to keep an experienced palate interested. It's mild enough to smoke early in the day, but there's considerably more going on than the pale wrapper might suggest.
For the seasoned smoker who occasionally wants something lighter without giving up character, Mooncake is an easy cigar to recommend. Only 12,000 cigars were made, all in this single Robusto format, so this isn't intended to become another permanent Connecticut on the shelf. Pick up a five-pack while they're around—smoke one with morning coffee and give the others some humidor time. This is Caldwell showing that Connecticut doesn't have to mean ordinary.
