The Caldwell Long Live the King Lock Stock Belicoso comes from one of the blends that established Robert Caldwell's reputation when Caldwell Cigar Co. arrived in 2014. If Eastern Standard showed that Caldwell could make a refined, lighter cigar without sacrificing character, Long Live the King went in the other direction. This was the richer, more forceful side of the original Caldwell portfolio, built around an aged Dominican Corojo wrapper with Dominican binder and an unusually diverse combination of Dominican, Nicaraguan and Peruvian filler tobaccos. It's a blend assembled for depth rather than simplicity, with the Corojo providing the spice and aromatic character that holds everything together.
The 5" x 52 Lock Stock is a particularly good format for the blend. Its Belicoso head concentrates the smoke on the palate, while the relatively short body brings the richer tobaccos into play without much waiting around. Expect an earthy, well-seasoned opening with cedar and Corojo spice, followed by darker impressions of roasted coffee, leather and cocoa. The Peruvian tobacco adds another dimension to the core, while an underlying sweetness keeps the cigar from becoming simply heavy or pepper-driven. It's full-flavored and firmly structured, but there's considerably more going on here than strength alone.
For the smoker trying to understand early Caldwell, Long Live the King is essential, and the Lock Stock may be one of the most expressive sizes in the family. Robert Caldwell built his reputation by seeking out unusual tobaccos and putting them together in ways that weren't always obvious on paper; Dominican Corojo alongside Dominican, Nicaraguan and Peruvian leaf is a good example. The short Belicoso format distills that philosophy into a cigar with plenty of concentration and very little wasted motion. Lock Stock is bold, spicy and unmistakably tobacco-forward—the sort of cigar I'd hand to an experienced smoker who wants to know what put Caldwell on the map.
