Birra dello Stretto (often labeled under the producer name Birrificio Messina Società Cooperativa) is a beer with one of the most powerful backstories in the modern industry. After the historic Messina brewery was closed by multinational owners in 2011, 15 dedicated workers—the "Master Brewers"—refused to let their tradition die. They invested their own life savings (TFR) to form a cooperative and build a new brewery from scratch. This Lager is their flagship "rebirth" beer, designed to honor the soul of Sicily and the resilience of its people.
Beer Description
This premium lager pours a brilliant, translucent golden color with a compact, persistent white head and fine carbonation.
Aroma: It features a remarkably clean and "noble" nose. Expect classic aromas of toasted malt and fresh grain, balanced by a refined, persistent floral and herbal hop bouquet that is more aromatic than your average Mediterranean lager.
Palate: On the tongue, it is light-to-medium bodied and incredibly balanced. It leads with a delicate, "pure malt" sweetness that quickly transitions into a dry, slightly spicy hop character. The mouthfeel is smooth and crisp, finishing with a pleasant, lingering bitterness that makes it exceptionally refreshing.
Profile: It has an ABV of 5.0% (though some variants like the DOC 15 are 4.7%) and a moderate bitterness that provides more structure and "bite" than mass-market Italian lagers.
Technical Notes: Brewed using a traditional bottom-fermentation process and high-quality "Puro Malto" (pure malt) barley. Unlike many industrial lagers, it is crafted with a focus on a long, patient cold-conditioning cycle to ensure a rounded flavor profile. It is often described as a "bridge" beer—uniting the approachability of a lager with the soul and passion of an artisanal cooperative.
