Bird Dog Blackberry Whiskey is made by Western Spirits, based in Bowling Green, Kentucky. It blends whiskey with two hand-selected, all-natural blackberry flavors. Bird Dog describes it as the flavor that helped start the flavored whiskey trend more than a decade ago. You get it at 40% ABV, which is 80 proof.
In the glass you will catch sweet blackberries and warm bourbon notes right away. The color is a golden amber. On the palate, smooth blackberry sweetness comes first. It then fades into honey, oak and rich bourbon character. The finish is only slightly sweet. It settles into the warmth of aged bourbon and lingers for a while.
This blackberry pour has done well with judges too. It earned a Gold medal at the 2010 San Francisco World Spirits Competition. That is a proud result for a fruit-flavored whiskey.
On a lazy afternoon, pour it neat or over ice for a sweet, easy sip. It works in simple mixed drinks too. Try it with lemonade for a Sweet Briar Lemonade, or top it with ginger ale. A squeeze of lime keeps the glass bright.
It goes well with dark chocolate, berry desserts or a plate of barbecue ribs. The sweet fruit plays nicely against smoky, salty food. Set out a bottle at your next cookout and let guests mix their own.
This bottle is a fun choice if you like fruit-forward drinks. It is also an easy way to welcome friends who are new to whiskey. If you prefer the plain taste of straight bourbon, the fruit here will feel like a big change.
