The Contrasts range
The Contrasts range is where Benromach steps away from its Signature style to test one variable at a time, such as the barley, the oak, the distillation or the peat. Each release is a limited small batch, bottled at 46% ABV with natural colour.
The whisky
Benromach normally mature in first-fill sherry and bourbon casks. For this release the spirit went into casks of American virgin oak that had held nothing before. The oak was air dried, coopered into 250-litre hogsheads in Speyside and gently charred before filling. Benromach describe tropical fruit rarely found in their main range, with dried banana, lemon and vanilla fudge.
How to enjoy it
Taste it neat, then with a drop of water to lift the citrus. Poured beside the Air Dried Oak 2012 and Kiln Dried Oak 2012, it shows how cask size and oak preparation shape Benromach's spirit.

How does it differ from the Air Dried Oak 2012?
Both use American virgin oak that was air dried. The 2012 release was bottled in 2023 and leans towards vanilla fudge, pepper and mint, while the 2013 vintage was bottled in 2024 in 250-litre hogsheads and shows more dried banana, lemon and Seville orange.
Is it smoky?
Lightly. Benromach give a phenol level of about 10-12 PPM for this release, so the smoke is smooth and in the background.
