First released in 2019, Barrell Whiskey American Vatted Malt borrows its name from the old Scottish category of vatted malt — the term once used for a whisky blended entirely from single malts. Here the idea is applied to American distilling, with malt whiskey drawn from six producers: Balcones Distillery in Texas, Hamilton Distillers Del Bac in Arizona, MGP in Indiana, Harvest Distillery in New York, Santa Fe Distillery in New Mexico and Kings County Distillery in Brooklyn.
Bottled at 59.11% ABV in a 750 ml format, the blend sets tangy Southwestern mesquite smoke against sweet, creamy barley malt, while briny coastal peat runs alongside warm vanilla from toasted oak. The layers shift as you drink, and the collaboration itself points toward where American single malt is headed.
