Fattoria dei Barbi Brunello di Montalcino is a classic Tuscan red made from 100% Sangiovese. It carries the Brunello di Montalcino DOCG name, the top tier of Italian wine law. The Colombini family has owned land in Montalcino since 1352. Barbi has made Brunello since 1892, so it is one of the oldest names in the area. It was also among the first estates to send Brunello to Europe, America and Asia.
The vines grow 300 to 500 meters up, on south-facing slopes of marl and limestone. After fermentation, the wine spends two years in oak. It starts in small and medium barrels and then moves to larger casks. It rests at least four months in bottle before release. Recent vintages come in at 14.5% ABV.
In the glass you see a bright ruby red. The nose is built on ripe red berries, with herbs and light spice. Each vintage adds its own accent. The 2019 shows strawberry, raspberry, anise and white pepper. The 2018 leans toward rosehip, eucalyptus, mint and Mediterranean herbs. On the palate it feels broad and well structured, with tannins that give it shape. The finish is long and lasting.
Critics rate it well year after year. The 2019 earned 95 points from both James Suckling and Robert Parker. The 2018 scored 95 points from Wine Enthusiast and 93 from Wine Spectator.
Serve it at about 64°F (18°C), and give it an hour in a decanter. Pair it with roast or grilled red meat, venison or wild boar stew. Mature cheeses are a great match too. You can enjoy it now or cellar it, since the producer says it can age 15 to 50 years.
