Arran Amarone Cask Finish delivers an intriguing blend of malt whisky and Italian wine influence. The dram is rich, fruity, and creamy yet retains Arran’s signature cereal malt clarity. Expect a sprightly profile dominated by cherries, chocolate, honey, and orchard fruit—rounded out with gentle spice and oak. Best enjoyed neat or with a splash of water to reveal layers of complexity.
🧪 Origins & Finishing
-
Distilled by Isle of Arran Distillers on the Isle of Arran, Scotland, this expression begins as a classic Arran single malt matured for several years in traditional ex-bourbon oak casks.
-
The dram then undergoes an Amarone wine cask finish, using barrels from Veneto’s high-grade Italian Amarone wines—resulting in rich red hues and a wine-enhanced twist. Bottled at 50% ABV (100 proof), non-chill-filtered young whisky with a bold flavor profile.
👃 Nose (Aroma)
-
Opens with poached pears, honey, and toasted almonds, followed by red berries, cranberry, vanilla, and light oak spice. Some reviewers note notes of Turkish delight and chocolate emerging on the nose. The wine cask influence is present but integrative.
👅 Palate & Texture
-
Palate: Creamy and fruit-forward, featuring dark chocolate, cherry, dried strawberry, Turkish delight, raisin, and orchard fruits. A gentle malt core is preserved beneath the wine-driven profile.
-
Texture: Medium-bodied, rich yet balanced, smooth and buttery, with a nuanced edge of oak tannin and spice.
🔁 Finish
-
The finish is medium to long, with lingering dried red fruit, cocoa, oak spice, and a touch of clove or cinnamon. There’s a subtle tannic dryness, but no overwhelming bitterness or harshness, thanks to the balanced ABV.
